In my coming to NYC, I was caught in the end of theater showing here for "Inglorius Basterds" (2009) and the release in Brazil. Luckily the DVD release didn't take long here and I was able to watch it without much delay. I really liked the movie. Since "Kill Bill" (2003) that i didn't have that much fun with a Tarantino movie, but I also didn't find this one all that I was expecting and everyone was saying. Still, I think all the nominations and awards were well deserved, specially to Christoph Waltz (Landa), which I am hoping it will win the Oscar. Brad Pitt is hilarious and Daniel Bruhl is a cutie. Excellent editing, screenplay and directing, all dully nominated for the Oscars. I can't wait for his next movie "Kill Bill 3"! Oh and for those who haven't seen it there is a great short film on YouTube called "Tarantino's Mind" (thanks to Livia).

"Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream."
If there is a movie I was waiting for a certain time, with some anxiety, it was "Avatar" (2009). Everybody talking about the technology, that the 3D would be extraordinary, etc, etc and where was the story? Did anyone knew what the movie would be about? I confess that I trust James Cameron almost blindly. I love "Terminator" (1984), "Alien" (1986), and "Titanic" (1997), - yes, I love it #thereisaidit. So when his next movie, with a ten years window between his last, was very much antecipated. When the release was near, more details began to surface: that it took him ten years to make the filme, that it cost US$ 500 million (with advertsing included, just the movie was a little more than US$ 300 million), the most expensive of all times, he developed technology, hired a linguist to creat a language, all the grandiosity that you expect of a megalomaniac director. But I still didn't know the story. I was going to see it purely by the visual catharsis. I had no idea who was in the cast. When it opened, all the IMAX sessions were sold out! I had to wait a couple weeks and achieved victory in Florida. I found that the movie has a story indeed. And as much corny, cliche, classic and similar to Pocahontas as it may be it won me over. I really liked it. The effects I don't even need to mention; the 3D is absurd, the photography and the special effects are amazing. i just found it a little long. He could have made two movies with the sotry of the first one, invented a third and created the new "Star Wars" (1977). But that won't stop him making the trilogy because the talks about a sequel have begun. And it has fans to supported, because it already broke the selling record "Titanic" (1997) held. It won the Golden Globes and is nominated for nine Oscars! I came out of the movie thater thinking "never doubt James Cameron; if he says he'll make a spectacular movie, he will!"

"Be... Italian..."
Check out the cast: Sente o elenco: Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Fergie, Judi Dench and Sofia Lauren. Could I miss it? Uhm... I think I could. "Nine" (2009), the film adaptation of the musical with the same name, directed by Rob Marshall - that adapted "Chicago" (2002). It really depends on the musical for me to like, normally the musical number annoy me a little because I feel like they stop the flow of the story. With "Nine" the opposite happened: I loved the musical numbers and hated the movie. The story is lightly based on Fellini, and despite the interesting connection, you don't connect with the characters and the stoy is a little loose. The musical numbers are amazing, highly choreographed and all the actores are really good in them, with special attention to Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard that are astounding. Fergie, obviously with the best voice, took the best song and, thank God didn't attempt to act she's there just to sing. Daniel Day-Lewis as good as always but not even him could save this movie. If you like the musical part of the movies, this is a great choice.

DVD | 500 Days of Summer
Believe it or not, at the same time "500 Days of Summer", was being released in the theaters in Brazil, it was being released in DVD here in the US. I love Zooey Deschanel so I had to see it. The typical movie made to conquer the indie hearts, it is really cute, in the style of Amelie. The narrative is non-linear; you see the 500 days out of order, which makes it very interesting. The color pallet is also reallyc ool, blue for Zooey, brown for Hoseph Gordon-Levitt (who was nominated to a Golden Globe). it has everything to become a cult hit.
